Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to travel on Sri Lanka's highland railway?

The highland railway is accessible year-round, though January through March typically offers clearer mountain views and more comfortable temperatures. The southwest monsoon (May to September) brings lush green landscapes and fewer tourists, while October through December provides pleasant weather with occasional afternoon showers. Each season offers distinct perspectives on the tea country's beauty.

How long does the Kandy-to-Ella journey take?

The full railway journey from Kandy to Ella covers approximately seven hours at a leisurely pace. This allows passengers to fully appreciate the changing landscapes as the train climbs through tea estates, crosses the Nine Arch Bridge, and navigates mountain tunnels. The unhurried pace is part of the experience, offering time to photograph the scenery and interact with fellow travelers.

What type of seating is provided on the trains?

Our journeys include first-class reserved seating, which provides cushioned seats with large windows ideal for photography. The carriages are equipped with fans and opening windows to enjoy the fresh mountain air. Unlike standard second or third-class carriages, reserved seating ensures your comfort throughout the journey and allows you to move between observation points without losing your seat.

Are meals included in the journey packages?

Yes, all our packages include meals prepared from fresh local ingredients. Day journeys feature a traditional Sri Lankan rice and curry lunch served in biodegradable containers. Multi-day packages include breakfast, lunch, and dinner at selected restaurants and accommodations, with options to accommodate dietary preferences when notified in advance.

How far in advance should bookings be made?

We recommend booking at least four to six weeks before your preferred travel dates, particularly during peak seasons (December to March and July to August). This ensures availability of first-class rail seats and preferred accommodations. However, we can often accommodate shorter-notice bookings depending on current availability. Contact us to discuss your specific travel dates.

What cancellation terms apply to bookings?

Cancellations made more than 30 days before departure receive a full refund minus a processing fee. Cancellations between 14-30 days receive a 50% refund, while cancellations within 14 days are non-refundable. We encourage travelers to consider travel protection, as unforeseen circumstances do occur. Specific terms are provided in your booking confirmation.
